Our new home has a very cool panel in the master bedroom closet.
The panel is made by General Electric and is called the GE Smart ConnectionCenter. This unit brings everything from coaxial cable, home networking and telephone into a central point. From there it redistributes it to all the rooms in the rest of the home. Every room has multiple networking drops and coaxial cable. A nice touch in the panel is the video amplifier which should help minimize signal loss when the coaxial cables are split in th panel. There is also empty conduit that runs to the attic and crawl space of the home allowing for future expansion.
The panel contains an electric outlet. My hope is to put both my cable modem and wireless access points inside the enclosure. There appears to be decent ventilation, but I worry about loss of signal quality for the wireless. Not sure if that will work or not, will be able to give it a try next week. I really like the idea of having my networking components centralized and also out of sight.
Last on the list will be the installation of the recently announced Home Server. Centralizing backups and storage. Once again need to check on size and ventilation. 🙂
Funny thing, my wife is all excited about the kitchen and master bathroom in the new place.
Me? In true geek form I’ve been infatuated with this small panel in the master bedroom closet. 🙂 Ok, better start doing some packing.
